Dr Karuppiah Dharshini, MBBS (Peradeniya), MD (Colombo), MRCP (UK), MRCP (UK) (Diabetes and Endocrinology), is a Consultant Endocrinologist at the Diabetes & Endocrinology Unit, Teaching Hospital Batticaloa, Sri Lanka.
She obtained her primary medical education from the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Peradeniya in 2004 with second-class honours. In 2010, she obtained her MD in medicine from the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo. Subsequently, she received her specialist MD training at Churchill Hospital, Oxford, UK, one of the leading tertiary referral centres for endocrinology in the world. Thenceforth, Dr Dharshini received her MRCP and MRCP speciality certificate in endocrinology from the royal college of physicians UK in 2014 and 2015 respectively.
Since her return to Sri Lanka, Dr Dharshini has contributed vastly to the development of the speciality in the country. She is an active member of the editorial board of the college journal, the Sri Lanka Journal of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (SJDEM). She was the assistant secretary of the endocrine society of Sri Lanka from 2014-2016. She was involved in formulating three National Guidelines in Endocrinology, and she is currently involved in the SLDC (Sri Lanka Diabetes and Cardiovascular initiative) project as a component leader for Foot care. She has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Her achievements also include the establishment of the Diabetes & Endocrinology Unit at Teaching Hospital, Batticaloa which is the tertiary centre for the whole Eastern province of Sri Lanka.
