Professor Sachith Abayarathna is a board-certified consultant endocrinologist and a Professor in Pharmacology at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo. Prof. Abhayaratna obtained his primary medical education from the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Colombo in 2005 with second-class honours (upper division). He had a brilliant undergraduate carrier with distinctions in Parasitology, Pharmacology and Senaka Bibile medal for pharmacology. He was awarded the Soma de Sylva award for the best performance in MD Medicine part I by the Ceylon College of Physicians.
In 2011, Prof. Abhayaratna obtained his MD in medicine from the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo. Subsequently, he received his specialist MD training in Diabetes and Endocrinology training as a Clinical Fellow in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Wolfson Diabetes and Endocrine Clinic, Cambridge University Hospital and Diabetes and Endocrinology training as a Clinical Fellow in Diabetes and Endocrinology at University College London hospital, both the leading tertiary referral centres for endocrinology in the world.
Thenceforth, Prof. Abhayaratna received his MRCP and MRCP speciality certificate in endocrinology from the royal college of physicians UK in the year 2014 and 2015 respectively. Moreover, He is the recipient prestigious fellowship from the American College of Endocrinology.
He joined the department of pharmacology of the faculty of medicine, the university of Colombo in the year 2014 as a senior lecturer and upgraded himself to Professor in Pharmacology in 2020. Apart from this, he is also a visiting lecturer in Pharmacology the Faculty of Medicine, Sir John Kotelawala Defense University and Visiting lecturer for the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Colombo and visiting lecturer in the MD oncology programme.
He was Secretary, of the Sri Lanka College of Endocrinologists 2017-2018 and is the Co-editor Sri Lanka Journal of diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (SJDEM) from 2021 to the present date. He is a member of the speciality board in endocrinology of the postgraduate institute of medicine and serves as a trainer and examiner for various undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
He has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and has authored a Chapter of the ‘Pharmacological management of Diabetes’ in the manual ‘Companion to screening and management of NCDs in Primary care’ and which is the main training manual of the Sri Lanka Diabetes and Cardiovascular initiative(SLDC), Chapter author on antibiotics section in the First Sri Lanka Student Formulary (SLSF) in South Asia and contributed to 3 chapters as an author in the International manual of insulin. And he has won numerous research awards including the Sri Lanka Association of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics Award and the Prof. K Rajasuriya Award for the best poster presentation at the Annual Academic Sessions of the Ceylon college of Physicians this year.
